Berberine is an alkaloid which occurs naturally in plants of the Berberis genus. It is closely related to our other product palmatine.
While its mechanism of action was initially unknown, research has found it acts as a COX inhibitor, which causes anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting prostaglandins . Berberine is a very selective prostaglandin inhibitor, whereas “traditional non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin, generally inhibit COXs activity non-selectively”. In addition, berberine also lacks the health problems and side effects of NSAIDs such as ulcers, liver cirrhosis and so on, which are caused by acetaminophen or aspirin.
More modern research shows berberine to have a wide variety of health benefits, including “antimicrobial, antidiabetic, anticancer activities” .
